The transition of 21,000 acres of the Keweenaw Heartlands into a locally governed community forest is a historic opportunity. We need practical, tested leadership to manage this massive public asset. I am running as an independent neighbor to protect our land, our access, so that the land we have enjoyed is protected for the residents of Keweenaw County 50 and 100 years from now. .
My Pledges to Keweenaw County:
Zero New Taxes: I firmly pledge to oppose any new property taxes or millages to fund the Authority during my first term.
Guaranteed Motorized Access: The state's baseline programs do not protect trail access for snowmobiles or ORVs. I will permanently protect all traditional recreational uses so our trails stay open.
Responsible Land Use: With the county’s decision to eliminate zoning, the Authority must take the lead in defending our borders. Without zoning, there is nothing to stop an outside developer from building a massive AI data center right up against our protected forests. I will work directly with our townships and use practical land management strategies to secure our boundaries, preventing development that would interfere with public access or threaten our sense of place.
Objective Governance: We need executive competence to navigate state agencies, manage complex public budgets, and ensure the Heartlands survive for the next 50 years and beyond.
